Key West Fly Fishing"Flats Fishing Guide Available for Hire"
Fly fishing in Key West has contributed to the modern development of the sport. In the past, anglers on fly would be found exclusively on the flats. And today, that is still mostly true. But the limits of the sport are being stretched, as some anglers toss flies to huge tarpon and even marlin. Equipment has followed suit. Fly reels and rods are now being manufactured en masse for fish weighing over 100 pounds. And fly shops on the island offer huge streamers the size of birds. These are switched in place of a trolled, hook less bait in front of a billfish. Most fly fishing in the Keys is still done in the pursuit of "the big three", the Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon. The IGFA will happily award anyone who catches all three in one day a certificate of achievement known as a "Key West Grand Slam". There was a time not too long ago that the permit, the most difficult fish to catch on the flats, was considered to be unfoolable to flies. But a local Keys flats legend came up with a crab pattern that acted more like the real thing. Before that, fly tyers were focused on the look over the action and had no luck.
