The lighter rod needs to be at least an 8/9-weight (my preferred weight for bonefish), with a floating fly line. The heavy rod needs to be at least a 12-weight (if you are going to go really big, a 15-weight is great to own - especially for monster tarpon, tuna, sailfish, marlin, and big sharks). More often than not, a sinking fly line is preferred.
Flies - Fly patterns that are proven are shrimp and crab patterns for the flats, and big deceivers for tarpon.
